From The Wire:
Kode9 & Spaceape’s new album Black Sun is released today, and with the artwork there’s a comic strip bundled in. The comic is drawn by composer and producer Raz Mesinai (aka Badawi), and illustrates the concept for the album. Mesinai’s drawing is included in the CD and LP version of Black Sun, but not with download, and is accompanied by a lyric sheet to decipher Spaceape’s signature drawl.
Kode9 and Raz also worked together on a track on Raz Mesinai’s Badawi’s Unit of Resistance album (available on CD & LP here).

When he’s not busy composing, arranging, DJing or combining ancient Middle Eastern rhythms with dub effects, Raz Mesinai (also known as Badawi) is writing graphic novels. He’s about to publish his very first novel, “The Heretic of Ether” on his very own Dubfiction Comics.
About Raz Mesinai (Badawi)’s “The Heretic of Ether”:
Deep underground, a war is being waged between two states of trance. Data has been transformed into liquid and flows through a massive network of pipelines connected to a main database, known as the “Main Stream”. Those who partake in the liquid lead passive lives in dark spaces, tranced out on remixed and re-edited images recorded from life before it went underground. On a routine pipeline inspection in the decrepit 4th quadrant, disgruntled maintenance worker Septa 6 discovers a mysterious hallucinogen, a fungus called the Thought Bacteria. What follows is a life-or-death conflict between the synthetic and the so -called organic, a war waged in the dimness of ancient catacombs, through the smoke filled underground clubs, the brightness of the interior spaces of your mind and the strange and deceptive neutrality of a corporate boardroom that chills like nothing you’ve seen before.

RAZ MESINAI Crossfader (World Premiere)
About Crossfader, Mesinai writes:
Written for the Kronos Quartet, Crossfader incorporates the rhythms, pulses and full-throttle energy of electronic dance music into the string quartet medium. Although it was initially written for string quartet and electronics, I realized that all of the sounds I wanted could be derived straight from the instruments alone. By using the many splendid extended techniques that a stringed instrument can deliver, the players simulate such effects as delays, phasers, and flanging used in modern electronic dance music.
Raz Mesinai’s Crossfader was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by Deborah and Creig Hoyt.

DUB WAR LADYKILLIN STYLE

flyer by ashes57
The legendary NYC soundboy BADAWI aka LADYMAN aka Raz Mesinai (ROIR, Skull Disco, Agriculture) also returns to Dub War in advance of his forthcoming deeper than deep Shackleton remix for Skull Disco. He plays a live set of original material which flirts with classic acid house, Middle Eastern rhythms, avant-classical music, and the heavyweight dub which has left his mark on albums like Bedouin Soundclash going back to the mid 90s. Did we mention his work is being performed at Carnegie Hall next month by the Kronos Quartet? No joke.
Check out Badawi’s latest album, Unit of Resistance and his 12″ UK single featuring Kode9 & Juakali.
